There is a popular point of view that a modern online presentation must contain illustrations. Many people take it for granted that without slides of all kinds a presentation looks cheap, unprofessional, and will not interest an audience.
However, our experience suggests that this is not the case at all. This mindset is reminiscent of a child’s opinion on books. “A book without pictures is not interesting, and in general, it is better to replace it with a comic book, a graphic novel or a movie.” Sounds familiar, right?
In fact, despite the fact that most online presentations do contain slides, there are many situations where you can, and perhaps even should, do without them. The most relevant example is the presentation of a relatively small product. Perhaps, for example, a tool kit, a multifunctional watch or a smartphone. Why waste time making static slides in this situation? Wouldn’t it be better if the presenter communicates with the audience and promptly responds to their questions, while showing the product’s capabilities in real time? The same applies to software products, as modern technologies make it possible to organize a demonstration of the software’s features without showering the audience with endless slides of screenshots.
But the possibilities for live, online presentations are not limited to small objects and programs. A video walkthrough in real-time of a tourist attraction or a property for sale or rent is sure to give the audience much more information than a slide-based presentation and provide a more immersive experience than the best and most professionally-assembled slides. The same applies to online vehicle test drives. Of course, in the latter case, for safety reasons, you will need an assistant (or assistants) – only a few specially trained professionals can afford to communicate with an audience while sitting (or standing) behind the wheel.
These are just a few examples. There are many more situations where live, online presentations without slides are appropriate.
Of course, we are not trying to argue that presenters should try to do without slides at all. We just want to draw your attention to the fact that their necessity is not written in stone and to remind you that a presentation’s success is always based on creativity.
